I remember so clearly when I was training for my first"Official" boxing match. I found a book called boxing and bodybuilding by Rocky Marciano. I was 14 years old and I wanted to make sure that I was training correctly for my upcoming bout, so I read the book to make sure that I was training properly, and the book reiterated what my trainer had been telling me... Do lots of roadwork! Since the beginning of combat sports roadwork has always been the mainstay of conditioning. Whether you were a Greco-Roman wrestler, or a Boxer, when they wanted to get in great shape for a match, they would hit the roadwork. When done correctly roadwork will strengthen your legs, increase your cardiovascular condition, and burn a lot of calories. People are so into cross-training now, sometimes the good old school, effective and very reliable training methods are forsaken for the latest "flavor of the month" workout. I say roadwork can keep up with the times because it is so so versatile. You can build up endurance, total lung capacity, and even an incredible anaerobic threshold. So as they say if it ain't broke don't fix it go out and do some roadwork.
Here are few ways you can add "roadwork" into your training remine... See how versitile "roadwork" can be.
AR.. 5k, beach walk/jog, hike, jog around neighborhood, take a romantic stroll
Sprint workouts... Run a mile for time, Tabata sprints, sprint 100 meters/jog 300 meters X 15 minutes, 15 secont sprint/45 second jog X 8, any combo of sprints and jog or walk
Mental Toughness workout... Anything hard 20-30 min... Run, hike, stairs, soft sand, hill. Just make sure it's between 20 and 30 minutes, and it's not a sprint, but it is very "grinding" and uncomfotable.
Mke sure you don't try and become a marathon runner, long runs are for runners only and have no place in a martial artist's training (unless you want to be a marathon runner).
Make sure you check with your Dr. before doing any roadwork...
