Stopping fights too early or too late has always been an issue in Combat sports. Besides, the three knockdown rule in some boxing and kickboxing organizations when to stop a fight is usually subjective, and it is decided by the referee or the corner.
During a fight, the corner is on the outside, looking in, and the referee has a much closer and better view of the fighters, so they are usually the first line of defense. In between rounds, if the corner feels the fighter should not continue, that is a very subjective Decision, but usually, the trainers and coaches know the fighter much better than the referee does.
Fighting comes with many risks some of them, minor, some of them very major. Every fighter that steps in the octagon are ring accepts those risks. The referee is there to make sure the fighters abide by the rules, keeps order during the fight, but their main responsibility is the safety of the fighters.
Let's focus on the UFC right now, for that is the most popular combat sport today. And true, it is an organization promoting MMA, however anyone who is in the sport knows it's more than that. The referees that work in the UFC are the best anywhere , and they make very few mistakes. If, and when they do stop a fight, 99% of the time there are no arguments, however, at times, the spectators, and the fighter who takes the loss will complain that the fight was stopped too early. There are many negative consequences to losing a fight, so that is understandable why the fighter, their team, and fans will complain about an early stoppage. Sometimes they are right, and it was stopped too early, but very seldom.
You know what's worse than having a fight stopped too early, having a fight stopped too late. It's hard to complain when you're in a coma with a tracheostomy, being turned every four hours by an overworked Filipino nurse, I'm just saying.
