I may be slightly biased because the left hook is definitely my favorite strike in all of Martial Arts, however I have some good reasoning and facts to back up why I think the hook is the best strike to teach for self-defense. Probably the most important reason is at least 98% of all non-training people who come in to my gym and I asked them to throw their hardest punch will throw A ugly “hook“ with their dominant arm. With that said, that tells me it is the most natural punch for the human anatomy to throw given the ball and socket joint of the shoulder. Another reason I feel the hook is a better strike for a street protection scenario is Because you can throw it from any positioning of your hands, while the straight right your hand has to be caulked by your cheekbone, kind of a Dead giveaway that you’re about to throw that punch. The hook on the other hand you can throw when your hand is anywhere including down by your waist because of the anatomy and physiology of the ball and socket joint of the shoulder.
