Unfair vs Fair Advantages In Combat Sports

Uncategorized Nov 30, 2022

The difference between an unfair advantage, and a fair advantage

Everyone who watched UFC 281 realized a few things, number one just how good of a fighter, Israel Adesanya is, how tough Israel Adesanya, and Alex Pereira are, and how Alex is punching power is not human.

What are the first things that people noticed when they got their pre-fight instructions in the main event UFC 281, Alex look like he should've been in a different weight class than Izzy, Yet they weighed almost exactly the same weight just 36 hours ago, how can they look 20 pounds different in that cage just the next day. Well, it seems like Alex has a uncanny ability to cut insane amounts of weight before the win, and even crazier he has, a very good skill to put even more weight back by the time they get into the cage to fight. People were taking to social media before the fight even began saying that Alex had an unfair, weight advantage, even though they mouth made the championship weight of 185.

So let's say that Alex weighed 15 or 20 pounds more than Izzy the night of the fight, I think we'll all agree that that is a huge advantage, but my question is why is it an unfair advantage, unless he did it, unfairly, whether cutting the weight or rehydrating. If he did either of those unfairly, and against the rules, then, yes, he has a very unfair advantage, however, if he did both legally, is it an unfair advantage, or just an advantage.

if you think his superior genetics when it comes to weight management, and that gives him a true advantage in the fate is unfair, if he was genetically stronger, faster, more athletic taller, or had a better chin because of genetics with those advantages be unfair as well?

If that were the case, then my Tyson was very unfair, because he was very genetically gifted when it came to speed and explosive knockout power. Was Tex Cobb cheating because he had a cast iron chin and he couldn't be knocked out, or was Muhammad Ali cheating because he had such an advantage in his God-given Speed, skill, heart, chin, and ko power?

Some fire organizations are trying to take that away from some of the fighters that are very skilled, or just genetically inclined to cut and rehydrate a lot better than others. They say it's dangerous for some reason, and it is an unfair advantage. I wonder if those same organizations feel the same way if one of their fighters has an advantage with power, speed, chin, or heart. I feel like Alex is Advantage is very real, but I think because there are so many genetic or even trained advantages in a fight, it's not fair for them to be considered "unfair". I think it's just part of the game or the hand that we were dealt.
