Everybody has things that are worth fighting for Life or limb, family, country), but what most people don’t realize is if something isn’t worth dying for, then it is not worth fighting for. That might come across a little extreme, but in any fight on the street you are always away from one punch, stab, trip, gunshot away from either dying or killing someone else and spending the rest of your life in prison.
Most people don’t like to think of “a fight“ like that, but it is the reality of it. In a fight, all it takes is one punch, or even a shove, where somebody might fall and hit her head on the concrete and die of a subdural hematoma. You might attack the wrong person, who feels threatened so he pulls his gun out and shoots you. In the street fighting is often a life or death proposition, so please choose wisely.
Was the cause of this “fight“ worth dying for, or going to prison for the rest of your life for?
Think hard about these scenarios (a political debate, someone grabs your wife's butt, someone entered the wrong public restroom) and tell me if they are worth dying over or spending the rest of your life in prison over. Realize that if you end up dead or in prison you can never protect or care for your family again... WHAT IS WORTH THAT?
As martial artists, we have to have that mindset. We have to play out these scenarios in our heads, just like we do the tactical ones.
